The village that opens the canyon
Motta Camastra is the Sicilian village most strongly identified with the Alcantara Gorges. Not because it is the largest or most famous, but because from here, literally, you descend into the canyon. The Motta Camastra municipal staircase is the most cited and used public access for visitors going to the gorges independently. For anyone searching Alcantara Gorges hours, Alcantara Gorges map or how to get to the gorges, sooner or later the reference is Motta Camastra.
The toponym itself declares it: motta is a medieval term for a fortified height. The village arose as a stronghold on the rock that overlooks the entrance to the gorges, in a strategic position to control passage on the river and the road. The original fortification is partly still legible at the top of the village.
With its 800 inhabitants, Motta is one of the smallest municipalities in the Alcantara Valley. The historic centre is compact, in lava stone, and can be visited in half an hour.
What to see
Municipal staircase to the Gorges
It is the point of interest. From here the staircase descends directly to the riverbed at the heart of the Gorges. It is the public access, managed by the municipality. For hours, prices and operational conditions, see the guide Alcantara Gorges: opening hours and prices.
Viewpoints over the gorges
Even without descending, there are some panoramic points from which you see the canyon entrance from above. They are especially useful in the months when river access is closed (November-March) and for those who do not want to or cannot descend.
Rock remains
At the top of the village, ruins of the medieval fortification testify to the defensive origin of the settlement. It is not a monumentally rich site, but the loop is worth it for the position and panorama.
