A village that has reinvented itself
Graniti is one of the middle Alcantara Valley villages that best embodies the spirit of reinvention. In recent years it has built a distinctive tourist identity around two elements: the Le Rive dell’Alcantara trail, one of the few fully accessible natural paths in Sicily, and a growing collection of signature murals that have turned the historic centre into an open-air gallery.
For visitors to the valley, Graniti is the right choice in three situations:
- you are travelling with people with reduced mobility or visual impairments;
- you are interested in contemporary street art;
- you are looking for a “light” alternative to the gorges canyon.
What to see
Le Rive dell’Alcantara
The Le Rive trail is Graniti’s flagship. A river path of about 800 metres that is fully accessible, with:
- smooth paving, gradient under 5%, no steps;
- regular benches and picnic tables, some adapted for wheelchairs;
- tactile-plantar strips for the visually impaired;
- Braille panels with relief maps;
- cantilever viewpoints over the river.
It is one of the best examples of accessible nature in Sicily. See the complete Le Rive itinerary.
Historic centre and murals
Graniti’s centre is dotted with dozens of murals painted on the walls of houses. Themes range from Sicilian rural life to mythology, from landscape to contemporary identity. New works are added every year, in an ongoing project that has brought some of the best Italian and international street artists to the village.
The tour is free, self-guided and at no cost. A couple of hours is enough to see the main works. A printed or digital map of the murals helps not to miss the more hidden ones.
How to get there
- From Taormina/Giardini-Naxos: ~13 km, 20-25 minutes via SS 185.
- From Catania: ~60 km, 70 minutes via A18 + SS 185.
- From Francavilla di Sicilia: ~5 km, 10 minutes.
- By bus: Interbus services from Taormina and Messina with a stop in Graniti.
When to go
- Spring-autumn: ideal season for Le Rive and for the murals.
- Summer: go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
- Winter: the trail is walkable; some murals may be subject to maintenance work.
What to combine
A typical day:
- Morning: Le Rive (1 hour) + tour of the murals (1-1.5 hours).
- Lunch: in the village or in Francavilla.
- Afternoon: Alcantara Gorges or Gurne, depending on mobility and interests.
For mixed groups (with people with reduced mobility), Graniti allows you to build a day in the Alcantara Valley without sacrificing accessibility.
