Tale of Tales (2015): the gorges on the big screen
It is the only film the Sicilia Film Commission archive officially attributes to the Alcantara Gorges. In Matteo Garrone’s film, the gorges are the setting of “The Queen” episode: the King faces the sea creature (a monster/dragon) to take its heart. In a Guardian interview Garrone called it his favourite location: “completely wild and very magic in a way.”
The Godfather: yes to the villages, no to the gorges
The most common misconception is that The Godfather was shot in the gorges. It was not. The Sicilian scenes (1971) were filmed in the villages:
- Savoca: the Bar Vitelli and the church of San Nicolò (Michael and Apollonia’s wedding).
- Forza d’Agrò: the Duomo, present in all three films.
- Motta Camastra, in the valley: Michael’s walks toward the fictional “Corleone”.
- Castello degli Schiavi at Fiumefreddo di Sicilia: Don Tommasino’s house and the car-explosion scene.
The gorges themselves are not a verified location of the film.
Other films shot at the gorges
Documented by sources like Wikipedia and specialist databases (not the official record):
- L’arcidiavolo (1966, Ettore Scola, with Vittorio Gassman): the opening “hell” scene at the gorges.
- I Paladini - Hearts and Armour (1983, Giacomo Battiato, cinematography by Dante Spinotti): rock-and-water settings.
- Virilità (1974, Paolo Cavara) and Pop Corn e patatine (1985, Mariano Laurenti): partial locations at the gorges.
Not only cinema: theatre on the banks
The gorges have also hosted evening performances in the canyon’s natural setting: Dante’s Inferno (2008) and Homer’s Odyssey (2019). These are seasonal events, to check in the current programme.
