Four hikes, four very different experiences

When people say “Alcantara Gorges hike” they actually mean four distinct itineraries, all within the River Park but with very different characteristics. Picking one at random is a common mistake: the same day can go well or badly depending on the choice. This guide is meant precisely to help you decide knowingly before you leave.

The four hikes in detail

Le Rive dell’Alcantara (Graniti)

The most accessible trail in the Alcantara Valley. It runs entirely on smooth paving, with no steps, tactile guide strips for the visually impaired and wheelchair-accessible picnic tables. You don’t enter the canyon proper; you walk along the river in a wide and quiet stretch, great for birdwatching and for travellers with reduced mobility.

See the full Le Rive itinerary.

Piccole Gole

A “smaller” version of the Gole di Larderia, reached from the Ponte di San Nicola in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia. The basalt walls narrow into a small canyon, less spectacular than Larderia but more intimate and less crowded. You can pair the visit with the nearby Cuba Bizantina di Santa Domenica.

See the full Piccole Gole itinerary.

Gurne di Francavilla

A 1.5 km loop starting from the centre of Francavilla di Sicilia. The “gurne” are natural pools carved into the basalt by the river: around ten of them, of different shapes and sizes, linked by small waterfalls. A very photogenic trail, suitable for families and fully walkable without special equipment.

See the full Gurne itinerary and the detailed guide to the Gurne dell’Alcantara.

Gole di Larderia (the canyon proper)

The classic hike: the columnar basalt canyon 25-30 m high, carved by an ancient lava flow and later eroded by the river. You enter from the public side (the municipal staircase of Motta Camastra) or the private side (Botanical and Geological Park). In both cases you walk in the river for about 2 km, with water at 10-15°C all year round.

See the full Gole di Larderia itinerary and the main Alcantara Gorges guide.

How to choose

Question → choice:

  • “I’m visiting in winter (November-March)” → only the viewpoints from above (Larderia closed), or Le Rive (always walkable).
  • “I’m travelling with children under 6, or with a pushchair” → Le Rive.
  • “We’re a family with school-age children” → Gurne di Francavilla.
  • “I want the iconic, photographic version” → Gole di Larderia (municipal staircase or private side, see hours/prices).
  • “I’m an experienced hiker, I want to combine” → Piccole Gole + Gurne in half a day, or Larderia in the morning + an Etna DOC winery in the afternoon.
  • “I want a long trek nearby” → Sentiero Italia CAI stages V23F (22 km) and V23G (14 km).

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main hikes at the Alcantara Gorges?

Four: Gole di Larderia (the main canyon, accessed from Motta Camastra or via the private park), Piccole Gole (smaller version accessible from the Ponte di San Nicola), Gurne di Francavilla (basalt pools, family-friendly), and Le Rive at Graniti (fully accessible to everyone, including reduced mobility).

Which hike is the easiest?

Le Rive dell'Alcantara at Graniti: 800 m fully paved with no steps and with tactile guide strips. Suitable for families with pushchairs, people with reduced mobility and visually impaired visitors.

Which hike is the most scenic?

The Gole di Larderia, the classic basalt canyon. The columnar basalt walls up to 25-30 m high are the most recognisable photo spot in the entire Alcantara Valley.

Are there long-distance hikes?

Yes: the Sentiero Italia CAI passes through the gorges area with stages V23F (Piano Provenzana → Mojo) and V23G (Mojo → Contrada Rindena), each 14-22 km. These are not in-canyon hikes but valley traverses.

Can the hikes be done independently?

Yes, all four can be done without a guide. Larderia and Piccole Gole require water shoes and care with the cold water. The Gurne are a marked loop from the centre of Francavilla. Le Rive is fully accessible.

Which hike should I pick if I'm going with children?

Le Rive (Graniti) for very young children or pushchairs, Gurne (Francavilla) for school-age children. The Gole di Larderia are possible but require close attention near the river. See the dedicated guide Alcantara Gorges with kids for details.
