Where to stay: coast or valley?

Two different logics, both valid:

  • Coast (Taormina, Giardini-Naxos): more hotels, restaurants, nightlife and the sea; the gorges are about 30 minutes away. Ideal if you want convenience and a day trip.
  • Valley villages (Castiglione di Sicilia, Francavilla, Motta Camastra, Randazzo): an authentic immersion, quiet, close to gorges, gurne and vineyards. In return: fewer services and many seasonal openings.
  • Farm stays (agriturismo) among vineyards and hazelnut groves: a food-and-wine experience, often serving their own produce.

Types of lodging

The area has farm stays, B&Bs, holiday homes, wine resorts among the Etna vineyards and hotels (mostly on the coast). We keep this informative: we don’t list specific names or prices, which vary by season and property — check directly.

What to eat: the local products

The valley lives on mountain produce: Nebrodi provola DOP, tuma, ricotta and pecorino; Nebrodi black pork (sausage, salami); Nebrodi hazelnuts and Bronte pistachio DOP from nearby; valley-floor citrus; and the north-slope Etna DOC wines. The classic treat is granita with a brioche.

The typical dishes

  • At Castiglione di Sicilia: tagghiani with nettle, rabbit, sciauni (ricotta fritters).
  • At Randazzo: macaroni with black-pork ragù, mushrooms, wild asparagus; nougat and almond-and-pistachio sweets.
  • Across the Etna area: pasta alla Norma (tomato, fried aubergine, salted ricotta) and first courses with mushrooms and wild fennel.
  • At Motta Camastra, the “Le mamme del borgo” initiative: home cooking in the village houses, by reservation.

Coast or valley: how to choose

  • Pro coast: services, transport, nightlife, the sea. Con: more touristy and pricier, away from the rural feel.
  • Pro valley: authenticity, often lower prices, nature and wineries within reach. Con: fewer services, seasonal openings, a car all but required.

The wine villages are generally less than 30 minutes apart: a good base in the valley lets you move around easily.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the best times for the valley: mild weather and, in autumn, the harvest. In summer there is more on offer but also more crowds at the gorges. In winter many village services close or scale back: always check before you go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to stay on the coast or in the valley?

It depends on what you want. The coast (Taormina, Giardini-Naxos) offers more services, restaurants and the sea, with the gorges about 30 minutes away. The valley villages (Castiglione, Francavilla, Motta Camastra, Randazzo) offer authenticity, often lower prices and proximity to gorges, gurne and vineyards, but with fewer services and seasonal openings.

What do you eat in the Alcantara Valley?

Etna and Nebrodi mountain cooking: Nebrodi provola DOP, black pork, mushrooms, wild fennel, hazelnuts, Bronte pistachio DOP, valley-floor citrus, and Etna DOC wines. Dishes include macaroni with black-pork ragù, pasta alla Norma, and tagghiani with nettle at Castiglione.

Do the villages have restaurants open all year?

In the small towns many places are seasonal and may close or cut back off-season. Check openings in advance, especially outside summer. Motta Camastra also has 'Le mamme del borgo', home cooking in the village houses, by reservation.

Do you need a car?

In the valley, yes — practically essential: public transport between the villages is sparse. From the coast the gorges are easily reached by car (A18 exit Giardini-Naxos, then SS185 towards Francavilla).
