From Taormina, the classic half-day trip
Taormina is the most common base for visiting the Alcantara Gorges: they are about 20 km away, a half-day trip. The real question for anyone staying here is not only “how far”, but how do I get there: by car, on a tour or by bus? This guide answers exactly that. For routes from the other cities (Catania, Messina, Palermo) see the how to get to the Alcantara Gorges guide.
By car from Taormina (or Giardini-Naxos)
- From Taormina: about 20 km, ~30 minutes.
- From Giardini-Naxos (closer, at the mouth of the valley): about 14 km, ~20 minutes.
- Route: go down to the coast, take the SS114 towards Giardini-Naxos, then climb inland on the SS185 up the Alcantara valley towards Francavilla; the Fondaco Motta access (Motta Camastra) is about 12-15 km along the SS185. By motorway: A18, Giardini-Naxos exit, then SS185. You do not go over the Sella Mandrazzi pass, which lies beyond the gorges.
In high season the critical factor is parking: arrive early. Details on access and parking in the how to get there guide.
Without a car: the real options
Visiting the gorges from Taormina without a car is possible, with some care. In order of reliability:
- Organized tour - the easiest: half a day, often combined with Etna or Castiglione.
- Scheduled Interbus line - direct and cheap, but you are tied to the timetable.
- Taxi - flexible, but the most expensive option.
The Interbus bus
Interbus runs a line connecting Taormina and Giardini-Naxos directly to the Alcantara Gorges entrance (in Taormina it leaves from the Bus Terminal on Via Pirandello, about 50 minutes). It is the cheapest car-free option.
Note, though: service and timetables vary by season. Before planning, check current schedules on the official site interbus.it and, above all, confirm the last return bus: onward options from Fondaco Motta are scarce.
By train you cannot reach the gorges directly: at most you get to Taormina-Giardini station, then continue by bus or taxi.
Tours from Taormina
Half-day excursions from Taormina to the gorges are very common and often combined with Etna or Castiglione di Sicilia. Interbus itself offers guided “Etna + Alcantara” excursions departing from Taormina, Giardini-Naxos and Letojanni. We do not point to specific operators: weigh length, what is included and reviews.
A half day from Taormina: how to plan it
Half a day is plenty:
- Leave in the morning (about 30 minutes by car, 50 by bus).
- Visit for 1.5-2 hours: descend into the canyon via the municipal staircase (€2 ticket) or the private access of the Botanical and Geological Park (its own tariffs). Up-to-date details in the opening hours and prices guide.
- Cold water 10-15°C year-round: bring water shoes and a dry change if you enter the river.
- Back in the afternoon; with a car you can add a stop.
What to combine on the same trip
- Castiglione di Sicilia and an Etna DOC winery (north slope), a few km up the valley.
- The Gurne di Francavilla, family-friendly basalt pools.
- Etna, if you have a full day: many tours combine the two.
