Overview

Le Rive dell’Alcantara is a purpose-built accessible pathway along the river at the small town of Graniti. Designed to welcome visitors of all abilities, the trail features smooth surfaces, gentle gradients, rest areas with benches, and tactile elements for visually impaired visitors. It is one of the few fully accessible nature trails in the Alcantara valley and a model of inclusive outdoor design.

The Trail

The Accessible Path

The walk begins at a small car park on the outskirts of Graniti, where accessible parking bays and an information board mark the trailhead. From here, a paved and compacted-gravel path follows the bank of the Alcantara River for approximately 800 metres.

Key features along the way include:

  • Tactile guide strips: Raised strips embedded in the path surface help visually impaired visitors navigate independently. At key points, tactile information panels with Braille text and relief maps describe the landscape and its ecology.
  • Rest areas: Shaded benches and picnic tables are spaced at regular intervals. Several are designed to accommodate wheelchairs.
  • Viewing platforms: Cantilevered platforms extend over the riverbank, offering close-up views of the water and the surrounding riparian woodland.
  • Gentle gradients: The entire path stays within accessibility standards, with no steps and a maximum gradient of around five per cent.

The River

The stretch of the Alcantara at Graniti is wide and calm, with gravel bars and shallow pools. It is a pleasant spot for paddling (with care) and a good place to observe waterbirds, including herons, egrets, and the occasional kingfisher.

Graniti and Its Murals

The town of Graniti itself is worth a visit. In recent years, it has become known for its growing collection of street murals — large-scale artworks painted on the facades of houses throughout the old centre. The murals depict scenes from Sicilian rural life, mythology, and the natural landscape, and they have transformed the village into an open-air gallery. A short stroll through the lanes after completing the riverside walk makes a rewarding complement to the experience.

Facilities

  • Accessible toilets: Located near the car park.
  • Drinking water fountain: Available at the trailhead.
  • Picnic area: Tables and waste bins provided.
  • Information point: Staffed seasonally, with maps and leaflets about the valley.

Practical Tips

  • Footwear: Any comfortable shoes are suitable. The path is smooth throughout.
  • Best season: Year-round. The path is maintained in all seasons, though some sections may be muddy after prolonged rain.
  • Duration: 20 to 40 minutes for the out-and-back walk; longer if you explore Graniti’s murals.
  • Parking: Free accessible car park at the trailhead.
  • Pushchairs: The path is fully suitable for pushchairs and prams.
  • Pets: Dogs are welcome on a lead.
