Overview

The Gurne of Francavilla are a series of natural pools sculpted over millennia by the Alcantara River as it carved through ancient basalt lava flows. The word “gurne” comes from a local Sicilian term for deep, still pools, and these emerald basins are among the most photogenic spots in the entire valley. This easy loop trail offers a gentle introduction to the geological wonders of the Alcantara, making it ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a peaceful immersion in nature.

The Trail

The walk begins in the centre of Francavilla di Sicilia, one of the valley’s most charming hilltop towns. From the main piazza, follow the signed path downhill towards the river. Within minutes, the sound of flowing water rises to meet you, and the first pool comes into view — a deep, jade-coloured basin framed by dark volcanic rock.

What You Will See

  • Basalt pools: The gurne themselves are the highlight. Each pool has its own character — some broad and shallow, others narrow and surprisingly deep. The basalt walls display a range of textures, from smooth, water-polished surfaces to rough, honeycombed formations.
  • Scenic overlooks: Several wooden platforms and cleared viewpoints along the trail provide excellent vantage points for photography. The contrast between the dark rock and the turquoise water is especially striking in the morning light.
  • Riparian vegetation: The banks are lined with willows, oleanders, and Mediterranean scrub. In spring, wildflowers carpet the riverside meadows.
  • Village lanes: The return leg passes through the narrow lanes of Francavilla di Sicilia, where you can admire traditional stone houses and catch glimpses of Etna above the rooftops.

Route Details

The loop follows a well-maintained path along the riverbank before climbing gently back towards the village on a paved lane. The total distance is approximately 1.5 km with negligible elevation gain, and the terrain is mostly flat with a few short, stepped sections near the overlooks.

Practical Tips

  • Footwear: Trainers or light hiking shoes are sufficient. The path can be slippery near the water after rain.
  • Best season: Spring (April—May) for wildflowers and good water levels; early autumn (September—October) for warm weather and fewer visitors.
  • Swimming: The pools are tempting but can be very cold, even in summer. If you plan to swim, bring water shoes and be aware that currents can be deceptive near outflows.
  • Duration: Allow 45 minutes to one hour for a relaxed walk, longer if you stop to photograph or sketch.
  • Refreshments: Francavilla di Sicilia has several bars and trattorias near the start point.
  • Accessibility: The overlook platforms are accessible, but some sections of the riverside path are uneven and not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
